Bonaparte, Louis
(1778-1846)
king of Holland, brother of Napoléon I
Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, the son of carlo maria bonaparte and maria letizia ramolino, and younger brother of napoléon i, Louis Bonaparte served as aide-de-camp to Napoléon during that commander's campaigns in Italy and in Egypt. He was married against his will to hortense de beauharnais, the daughter of Joséphine beauharnais, in 1802. Napoléon made Louis king of Holland in 1806. There, out of concern for the welfare of his subjects, Louis refused to continue the Continental Blockade imposed by Napoléon. Because of his conflicts with the emperor, Louis was forced to abdicate in 1810. He had three children, one of whom, Louis-Napoléon, became napoléon ш.
